# LEARNING MORE TO SUPPORT YOU: BETTER BRAS AFTER BREAST CANCER

Being able to help someone find a comfortable bra starts with listening. But listening needs to be supported by knowledge, particularly when someone is preparing for breast cancer surgery or adjusting to changes after treatment.

Being able to help someone find a comfortable bra starts with listening. But listening needs to be supported by knowledge, particularly when someone is preparing for breast cancer surgery or adjusting to changes after treatment.

On 24 September, I attended the Better Bras After Breast Cancer Group Training Course at Cancer Research UK HQ in Stratford, London. It was a day of learning, practical bra fitting and hearing directly from people who have experienced breast cancer.

I’ve now completed the training and received formal certification in bra fitting for people after breast cancer, endorsed by Pudding and Cancer Research UK.

This matters to me because The BRAologist has always been about more than finding a bra size. It’s about helping people understand their options, offering honest advice and taking the time to find out what they need.

## Why this knowledge matters

I’ve had clients come to me the day before their surgery, having only recently found out that they were having an operation. They’d been told to buy a post-surgery bra, but didn’t know where to go or what to choose.

They were worried, short of time and trying to make sense of something unfamiliar alongside everything else they were facing.

In that moment, a bra isn’t simply another item to buy. It’s another decision to make when there’s already a great deal to take in.

Those conversations have stayed with me. They reinforced how important it is to be able to offer calm, informed guidance, rather than leave someone to work through the options alone.

That means understanding what their care team has asked them to wear, recognising where more clarification is needed and being honest about how I can help. Bra fitting advice should sit alongside medical guidance, never replace it.

## Why the Cancer Research UK endorsement matters to me

The endorsement by Cancer Research UK and Pudding was an important part of this training for me. When developing knowledge in an area that touches people’s experience of cancer, I wanted to undertake specific training rather than rely on general bra fitting experience alone.

This wasn’t simply an introduction to a range of post-surgery bras. The day brought together learning about the changes people can experience, practical fitting and the perspectives of people who have lived through breast cancer.

The certification recognises that I’ve completed that training. It doesn’t make me a healthcare professional, and it isn’t an endorsement of every product or recommendation at The BRAologist. What it represents for me is an important step in developing the specialist knowledge I bring to these conversations.

The responsibility is to put that learning into practice thoughtfully, and to keep learning.

## Understanding the person, not just the bra

Breast cancer treatment can bring changes in breast shape and size, differences between breasts, scarring, sensitivity and swelling. Someone may have had a mastectomy, lumpectomy or reconstruction, and may or may not wear a breast prosthesis.

The training explored how those different circumstances can influence a bra fitting. We returned to the principles of a well-fitted bra, then considered how the process needs to adapt to the individual.

The practical work included:

- Bra fitting after mastectomy, lumpectomy and reconstruction.
- Fitting with and without a breast prosthesis.
- Working with different breast shapes and body shapes.
- Recognising a good fit and understanding where an alternative may be needed.
- Exploring specialist bras alongside mainstream lingerie options.

Working with models who had different experiences of breast cancer helped connect the theory to real people. We could see how a bra sat, listen to how it felt and consider why a different shape or construction might work better.

That combination matters. A bra can appear to fit, but the person wearing it still needs to feel comfortable in it.

## Listening to what matters to you

Hearing directly from people who have experienced breast cancer reinforced the importance of not making assumptions.

For one person, softness may be the priority. For another, it may be feeling secure wearing a prosthesis. Someone else may want help with differences in breast shape, or simply want to wear a beautiful bra that feels like them.

Those preferences don’t become less important because someone has had treatment.

It’s not enough to understand what a bra is designed to do. I also need to understand what the person wearing it wants and needs from it.

That is why a conversation remains the starting point. Knowledge helps me ask better questions and explain the options more clearly; listening helps me understand which of those options matter to you.

## More knowledge, fewer assumptions

One of the most useful lessons from the day was that a “post-surgery” label doesn’t tell the whole story.

A specialist bra may be the right choice. For some people, at an appropriate stage and with their care team’s guidance taken into account, a mainstream lingerie bra may also be suitable.

We explored different brands and constructions to understand those possibilities. The purpose wasn’t to find one answer for everyone, but to look carefully at the details: fabric, seams, cup shape, support and how a bra works with an individual’s body.

The bra needed immediately after surgery may also be different from the one someone wants later on. Recognising that distinction is part of offering useful advice, rather than treating all post-surgery needs as the same.

Better knowledge allows for more considered recommendations. It also helps me recognise the limits of what I can advise on.

## How this fits with The BRAologist’s values

The BRAologist is built around comfort, support, honest education and a private, personalised experience.

Developing specialist knowledge is part of honouring those values. If someone comes with questions, uncertainty or a change in their body, they deserve more than a quick suggestion from a rail of bras.

They deserve to be listened to, to understand why an option might suit them and to have space to decide how it feels.

For me, that means:

- Explaining recommendations rather than expecting someone to take my word for them.
- Keeping the person’s comfort and preferences at the centre of the conversation.
- Working with the guidance they’ve received from their care team.
- Being clear when I don’t have the right answer or solution.
- Continuing to develop my knowledge rather than treating one course as the end of the learning.

My role as a braologist isn’t to tell someone what they ought to want. It’s to offer the knowledge and guidance that help them understand their choices.

## Bringing the learning back to Hastings

Having this knowledge available locally matters too. People in Hastings, East Sussex and the surrounding area should be able to find informed bra fitting guidance closer to home.

The course has given me practical skills and an action plan for continuing to develop this support at The BRAologist. Being part of the Better Bras After Breast Cancer community also offers opportunities to find the right solution for any and everyone going through surgery.

I’d like to build stronger connections with local cancer care teams and organisations, so more people know where bra fitting advice is available when they need it.

Completing the training is a step forward, not a finishing point. Its value lies in the conversations that follow: helping someone understand what they’ve been asked to buy, exploring a changed fit, or listening when their priorities are different from what anyone expected.

That’s why I did it. To offer help grounded in knowledge, with the person always coming first.
